The requirement that applies today
The seventh Codex principle, at step 12, is to establish documentation and record keeping for the procedures and records that support the principles and their application. The current edition maps it to documented information.
ISO/DIS 22000:2026, Annex A 11, Codex principle 7 and step 12: establish documentation and record keeping.
What the draft does
Mapped in the current Annex A to 7.5; the 2026 table is sold by ISO and not held here: The 2026 contents keep 7.5 and its subclauses at the same numbers and titles. For this row the inferred 2026 destination is 7.5, 8.3, 8.9.5; that reading comes from the clause titles, not from the published 2026 table.

Why this clause matters
The records are the system's memory. The clause asks for the documents the standard requires, those the organization needs and those regulators and customers require, with control over versions, access, storage, retention and protection from alteration. The 2026 contents keep the clause and its three subclauses.
Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor
For A.11, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.
- A document index with owner, version and location
- A retention schedule covering at least the shelf life and the legal requirement
- Evidence that records cannot be altered without a trail
Where systems usually fall short
- Obsolete copies available at the point of use
- Records that can be edited after the fact
How to prepare
Ask someone who does not know the system to find the current hazard control plan in 60 seconds, then a record from a six-month-old lot. Time both.
