The requirement that applies today
When a nonconformity occurs, the organization reacts by controlling and correcting it and dealing with the consequences, evaluates whether action is needed to remove the cause so it does not recur or appear elsewhere, implements the action, reviews whether it worked, and changes the system if needed. Corrective action has to be appropriate to the effect of the nonconformity. Records cover the nature of the nonconformity, the actions taken and the results.
ISO 22000:2018, 10.1 Nonconformity and corrective action; ISO/DIS 22000:2026, 10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action.
What the draft does
Renumbered from 10.1 to 10.2: The public contents show nonconformity and corrective action at 10.2, where the current edition has it at 10.1. The wording appears to be retained, which is an inference from the contents because the draft text is sold by ISO and not held here.

Why this clause matters
This is the system-level corrective action clause, distinct from the product-level actions in 8.9.3. It applies to audit findings, complaints, process failures and any other nonconformity. The draft moves it from 10.1 to 10.2, so every document that cites the old number needs a check.
Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor
For 10.2, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.
- A nonconformity register with cause, action, effectiveness check and closure
- Evidence that similar nonconformities were considered
- A system change made as a result of a repeated finding
Where systems usually fall short
- Every finding closed with retraining
- No check that the action worked
How to prepare
Take a finding that has appeared twice. Ask why the first action did not prevent the second. The answer is the real corrective action, and it usually involves a process or a resource, not a person.
