The requirement that applies today
The first Codex principle, at step 6, is to conduct the hazard analysis and consider control measures. The current edition maps it to hazard analysis and to the validation of control measures and combinations.
ISO/DIS 22000:2026, Annex A 5, Codex principle 1 and step 6: conduct the hazard analysis.
What the draft does
Mapped in the current Annex A to 8.5.2 and 8.5.3; the 2026 table is sold by ISO and not held here: The 2026 contents keep both clause titles. For this row the inferred 2026 destination is 8.5.2, 8.5.3, 8.5.2.4; that reading comes from the clause titles, not from the published 2026 table. The new Annex B is informative and its text is sold by ISO and not held here.

Why this clause matters
The analysis has to be specific enough to defend each significant hazard and each control choice. Validation, which sits alongside it, answers whether the chosen control can actually work. The 2026 contents keep both clauses, and the draft adds an informative annex on selecting control measures.
Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor
For A.5, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.
- A hazard analysis with visible reasoning for each significant hazard
- A validation record for each control measure or combination
- The link from each hazard to the chosen control
Where systems usually fall short
- A table of hazards with no significance reasoning
- Controls chosen by habit with no validation for this product
How to prepare
Take one significant hazard and show the analysis, the control choice and the validation in a single file. If any of the three is missing, the principle is not met.
