Selection and categorization of control measures: general

Annex B sectionNew informative annexRetrieved 2026-10-19Last updated: 2026-10-19

The requirement that applies today

The draft adds an informative annex about choosing control measures and sorting them into OPRP or CCP. The public contents name Annex B and its first section, and the public foreword describes it as a new informative annex about how control measures are chosen. It is guidance, not a new requirement, and its text is not in the public sample.

What the draft does

New informative annex: The public foreword names a new informative annex about how control measures are chosen. The annex is informative, so it does not add a requirement, and its text is sold by ISO and not held here.

Why this clause matters

The annex matters because the OPRP versus CCP decision is the most contested judgement in a food safety audit. An informative annex does not create a new obligation, but it signals the committee's intended way of reasoning, and auditors are likely to read it. A site should be able to explain its decisions in the same terms.

Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor

For B.1, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.

  • A decision record for each control measure
  • The reasoning for OPRP or CCP, with likelihood and severity
  • A list that matches the plan in use

Where systems usually fall short

  • Decisions made by habit with no written reasoning
  • A decision tree copied from a template

How to prepare

Before the annex is published, write the reasoning for your five most important control measures. When the annex appears, compare your reasoning with it and record any difference. That comparison is a useful management review input.
