The requirement that applies today

The organization makes sure the people doing work under its control know the food safety policy, the objectives that matter to their task, how their own work contributes to the system and what improved food safety performance brings, and what happens if the system requirements are not followed.

ISO 22000:2018, 7.3 Awareness; ISO/DIS 22000:2026, 7.3.

What the draft does

Unchanged title: The public contents keep 7.3 at the same number and title. No structural change is shown.

Why this clause matters

Awareness is competence’s quieter sibling: not can they do it, but do they know why it matters and what their part is. It is also where the culture work becomes visible. Short, specific conversations on the floor test this clause better than any e-learning completion rate.

Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor

For 7.3, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.

  • Induction and refresher content that covers the four points in the clause
  • Evidence that people can explain the policy and their contribution
  • How consequences of nonconformity are communicated without blame for reporting

Where systems usually fall short

  • Awareness measured by completion rates only
  • People who can quote the policy but cannot say what it means for their job

How to prepare

Ask five people, at different levels, two questions: what does our food safety policy ask of you, and what should you do if something looks wrong. The answers tell you more than the training register. Ask the question in the language people use on the line, not in clause language. If the answer is a shrug, the awareness activity has not landed, whatever the completion rate says.
