6.2

Food safety management system objectives and planning to achieve them

ClauseRetitled; possible consolidation, wording not verifiedRetrieved 2026-10-19Last updated: 2026-10-19

The requirement that applies today

The organization sets objectives for the system at the functions and levels where they matter. The objectives fit the policy, are measurable where practical, take account of applicable requirements, are monitored and verified, communicated, and kept current. Planning to reach them names what will be done, the resources, the responsible person, the completion date and how the result will be judged. The objectives are documented.

What the draft does

Retitled; possible consolidation, wording not verified: The public contents show 6.2 without subclause numbers, where the current edition has numbered paragraphs 6.2.1 and 6.2.2. An omission from a contents page does not prove consolidation; the draft text is sold by ISO and not held here.

Why this clause matters

Objectives are where a policy becomes a plan. The common failure is a set of objectives that are really targets for the business, such as output or waste, with no food safety measure in sight. A transition adds objectives for the new clauses, and the planning discipline in this clause is what stops them becoming wishes.

Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor

For 6.2, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.

  • The current objectives, with a measure, a target, an owner and a review date
  • The plan for each objective: actions, resources, dates and evaluation
  • Monitoring results that show progress against each objective

Where systems usually fall short

  • Objectives that are not measurable and cannot be reviewed
  • A plan that lists actions but never says how success will be judged

How to prepare

Rewrite one weak objective in the clause format: measure, target, owner, date, evidence, review point. Then add one objective for the new requirements, such as a culture baseline or a fraud vulnerability review, so the transition has a measurable home.
