6.1

Actions to address risks and opportunities

ClauseUnchanged titleRetrieved 2026-10-19Last updated: 2026-10-19

The requirement that applies today

When planning the system, the organization considers its context, the requirements of interested parties and the scope, then decides which risks and opportunities to address so the system can reach its intended results, increase good effects, reduce bad ones and keep improving. It plans the actions, integrates them into its processes, works out how it will judge whether they worked, and keeps the actions proportionate to their food safety impact.

What the draft does

Unchanged title: The public contents keep 6.1 at the same number and title. No structural change is shown.

Why this clause matters

This clause is about the management system, not the hazard analysis. Teams confuse the two and put HACCP hazards here, which leaves the real organizational risks, such as a single supplier, a ageing chiller or a lost key customer, unmanaged. The distinction is worth getting right before the revision adds more to the system.

Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor

For 6.1, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.

  • A risk and opportunity register with the action, owner, due date and effectiveness check
  • Evidence that the actions are built into process plans, not held in a separate list
  • A review record showing risks were re-scored after the actions

Where systems usually fall short

  • The register is a copy of the hazard analysis
  • Actions recorded with no date and no check that they worked

How to prepare

Separate the two registers on one page: organizational risks on the left, process hazards on the right. If the same item appears on both, decide which one it belongs to. This also makes the transition easier, because the draft keeps the two levels distinct.
