The requirement that applies today
The organization shows that the monitoring and measuring methods and equipment used for the PRPs and the hazard control plan are adequate. Equipment is calibrated or verified at specified intervals before use, adjusted as needed, identified so its calibration status is known, safeguarded from adjustments that would invalidate results, and protected from damage. Calibration and verification results are kept, traceable to international or national standards, or the basis is recorded where no standard exists. If a device or the process environment turns out to be out of specification, the organization assesses the validity of previous results and acts on the equipment and the affected product. Software used for monitoring and measuring is validated before use, kept updated, and changes are authorised, documented and validated.

What the draft does
Unchanged title: The public contents keep 8.7 at the same number and title. No structural change is shown.

Why this clause matters
Calibration is the quiet clause that can invalidate months of records. If a thermometer, pH meter or scale was out, every result since the last good calibration is suspect, and the site has to decide what that means for product. The clause requires that decision to be made and recorded.
Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor
For 8.7, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.
- A calibration register with intervals, results and traceability
- The assessment of previous results when equipment is found out of tolerance
- Software validation and change records for monitoring systems
Where systems usually fall short
- Calibration stickers with no certificate behind them
- An out-of-tolerance instrument with no product impact assessment
How to prepare
Pick the instrument closest to a critical limit and show its calibration history. Then ask what happened the last time one failed. If there is no impact assessment, write the procedure now.
