The requirement that applies today
The organization establishes, implements and maintains verification activities, with a plan that defines the purpose, methods, frequency and responsibilities. Verification confirms that the PRPs are implemented and effective, the hazard control plan is implemented and effective, hazard levels are within the acceptable levels, the input to the hazard analysis is current, and other actions are implemented and effective. Verification is not done by whoever monitors that activity. Results are kept and communicated. Where testing shows a hazard above the acceptable level, the affected lot is handled as potentially unsafe and corrective action is taken.
ISO 22000:2018, 8.8.1 Verification related to PRPs and the hazard control plan; ISO/DIS 22000:2026, 8.8.1.
What the draft does
Unchanged title: The public contents keep 8.8.1 at the same number and title. No structural change is shown.

Why this clause matters
Verification is the independent check that the controls worked. The independence requirement is the part most often missed: the line supervisor who monitors also signs the verification. The clause also makes clear that a failed test is a product issue, not only a paperwork issue.
Suggested evidence to discuss with your auditor
For 8.8.1, these are the artefacts we suggest discussing with your auditor. The standard publishes no evidence list, so this is our reading, not a requirement.
- A verification plan with purpose, method, frequency and owner
- Evidence that the verifier is independent of the monitor
- Results, communication and the action taken on a failed verification
Where systems usually fall short
- The same person monitors and verifies
- Verification results filed but never analysed
How to prepare
Check who signs the verification for each CCP. If it is the person who also monitors it, reassign the verification to someone independent and record the change.
